Muslim woman committed suicide after "lifestyle attacked on Facebook"

If your immediate response to this is "suicide is haraam" then you've missed the underlying issues in todays Ummah, we are far to condemning and judgemental of each other, Allah please grant us compassion truly He is not merciful to those who shown no mercy to each other. 

Rema Begum, 29, had been targeted by an anonymous stalker who sent both her and her family hate mail, exposing her relationships with non-Muslim men to her strictly religious parents.

She felt racked with guilt and believed she was leading an impure lifestyle, a close friend disclosed. She had also lost her job as a manager at the British Library and her health had gradually begun to deteriorate to the point at which she struggled to leave the house.

On September 4, Miss Begum had a glass of wine on the terrace of Sir Terence Conran's exclusive Coq D'Argent restaurant near the Bank of England before “calmly” jumping 80ft to her death.

Police found antidepressants and a note containing contact details for her next of kin in the handbag she left on the ledge.

Avril Atkins, who had known her since university, told the inquest that she had been having “some problems” with Facebook.

“Somebody – she didn't know who – had been sending letters to her parents about her lifestyle and relationships,” she said.

“She was getting quite a lot of hate mail – both she and her parents.”

Miss Atkins said that although her friend had followed some Muslim practices and had religious beliefs, she lived a “western lifestyle” and had non-Muslim boyfriends.

“I don't think it was something she openly told (her parents) about, however I believe they found out she had been seeing someone who wasn't Muslim,” she said.

“She did say to me that she hadn't been living a good Muslim life. She said she wanted to live a more Muslim-based life.”

Miss Begum reported the online abuse to the police before deleting her Facebook account and replacing it with one using a different name, the inquest heard.

After losing her job, she left her rented flat in Islington to move back in with her parents in Manor Park, East London.

But the once “happy and bubbly” young woman became increasingly depressed and had sought medical help.

The day before her death she had tried to hang herself at the family home but was taken to hospital by her parents. She was discharged after refusing treatment and promising never to try harming herself again.

Dr Sara Dimic, a psychiatrist who had seen her two months earlier, confirmed she had been suffering with depression but was "guarded" and feared about the confidentiality of the appointment.

She told City of London Coroner's Court: "She revealed to me that she had been feeling guilty for not leading her life according to her family's values and her religion.

"She thought that she had led a life that she was being punished for.

"Her depression was the response to her being pushed from her current job and her moral dilemma in terms of the way she lived her life."

Coroner Paul Matthews heard that a series of suicide notes were found at her home, some dating back four months.

He said there was “no doubt” that she was suffering from depression.

“It appeared to be reactive to the stresses she was subject to in her life,” he said, recording a verdict of suicide.

Three people have died jumping from the Coq D'Argent terrace.

Stockbroker Anjool Malde, 24, jumped clutching a glass of champagne in 2009 after being suspended from his job at Deutsche Bank and Richard Ford, 33, also a City worker, threw himself off the building in May 2007.

Council inspectors ruled that the barriers at the rooftop bar complied with health and safety laws.

Moroccan girl commits suicide after being forced to marry her rapist

A 16-year-old Moroccan girl has committed suicide after a judge ordered her to marry her rapist, according to Moroccan media reports.

Last year Amina al-Filali’s parents filed charges against their daughter’s rapist, a man 10 years older than her but it was only recently that a judge in the northern city of Tangier decided that instead of punishing him, the two must be married.

The court’s decision to forcibly marry Amina to her rapist was supposed to “resolve” the damage of sexual violation against her, but it led to more suffering in the unwelcoming home of her rapist/husband’s family.

“After I filed a complaint against him, he said he will marry her. And when he married her and took her to his family's home he mistreated her, beating her and leaving her starve with no food,” Zahra Mallim, Amina’s mother told the Morocco's 2M TV.

Traumatized by the painful experience of rape, Amina decided to end her life by consuming rat poison in the house of her husband’s family, according to the Moroccan daily al-Massae.

According to the newspaper, this type of forced marriage is rooted in local rural traditions to safeguard the honor of girls who are raped.

Moroccan penal code exempts a rapist from punishment if he agrees to marry his victim.

“When the judge said they will marry, I did not agree, but I could not challenge the law. I wanted that man (the rapist) to go to prison,” Lahsan al-Filali, Amina’s father, told the 2M.

“At first I did not agree to this marriage, but when the court of family affairs called me and pressured me, I agreed,” he added.

Feminists have long demanded an amendment to this article.

Hafida Elbaz, director of the Women’s Solidarity Association told a-Massae that the article provides an opportunity for a perpetrator to avoid punishment.

The story has widely spread on Twitter and on Facebook with many in Morocco demanding action against the judge who issued the ruling.

Psychiatrist of Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu Commits Suicide

Moshe Yatom, a prominent Israeli psychiatrist who successfully cured the most extreme forms of mental illness throughout a distinguished career, was found dead at his home in Tel Aviv yesterday from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. A suicide note at his side explained that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has been his patient for the last nine years, had “sucked the life right out of me.”

“I can’t take it anymore,” wrote Yatom. “Robbery is redemption, apartheid is freedom, peace activists are terrorists, murder is self-defense, piracy is legality, Palestinians are Jordanians, annexation is liberation, there’s no end to his contradictions. Freud promised rationality would reign in the instinctual passions, but he never met Bibi Netanyahu. This guy would say Gandhi invented brass knuckes.”


Psychiatrists are familiar with the human tendency to massage the truth to avoid confronting emotionally troubling material, but Yatom was apparently stunned at what he called the “waterfall of lies” gushing from his most illustrious patient. His personal diary details the steady disintegration of his once invincible personality under the barrage of self-serving rationalizations put forth by Netanyahu.

“I’m completely shocked,” said neighbor Yossi Bechor, whose family regularly vacationed with Yatom’s family. “Moshe was the epitome of the fully-integrated personality and had cured dozens of schizophrenics before beginning work on Bibi. There was no outward indication that his case was any different from the others.”

But it was. Yatom grew increasingly depressed at his complete lack of progress in getting the Prime Minister to acknowledge reality, and he eventually suffered a series of strokes when attempting to grasp Netanyahu’s thinking, which he characterized in one diary entry as “a black hole of self-contradiction.”

The first of Yatom’s strokes occurred when Netanyahu offered his opinion that the 911 attacks on Washington and New York “were good.” The second followed a session in which Netanyahu insisted that Iran and Nazi Germany were identical. And the third occurred after the Prime Minister declared Iran’s nuclear energy program was a “flying gas chamber,” and that all Jews everywhere “lived permanently in Auschwitz.” Yatom’s efforts to calm Netanyahu’s hysteria were extremely taxing emotionally and routinely ended in failure. “The alibi is always the same with him,” complained another diary entry. “The Jews are on the verge of annihilation at the hands of the racist goyim and the only way to save the day is to carry out one final massacre.”

Yatom was apparently working on converting his diary into a book about the Netanyahu case. Several chapters of an unfinished manuscript, entitled “Psychotic On Steroids,” were found in his study. The excerpt below offers a rare glimpse at the inner workings of a Prime Minister’s mind, at the same time as it reveals the daunting challenge Yatom faced in seeking to guide it to rationality:
Monday, March 8
“Bibi came by at three for his afternoon session. At four he refused to leave and claimed my house was actually his. Then he locked me in the basement overnight while he lavishly entertained his friends upstairs. When I tried to escape, he called me a terrorist and put me in shackles. I begged for mercy, but he said he could hardly grant it to someone who didn’t even exist.”

1500 farmers commit mass suicide

Over 1,500 farmers in an Indian state committed suicide after being driven to debt by crop failure, it was reported today.

The agricultural state of Chattisgarh was hit by falling water levels.

"The water level has gone down below 250 feet here. It used to be at 40 feet a few years ago," Shatrughan Sahu, a villager in one of the districts, told Down To Earth magazine

"Most of the farmers here are indebted and only God can save the ones who do not have a bore well."

Mr Sahu lives in a district that recorded 206 farmer suicides last year. Police records for the district add that many deaths occur due to debt and economic distress.

In another village nearby, Beturam Sahu, who owned two acres of land was among those who committed suicide. His crop is yet to be harvested, but his son Lakhnu left to take up a job as a manual labourer.

His family must repay a debt of £400 and the crop this year is poor.

"The crop is so bad this year that we will not even be able to save any seeds," said Lakhnu's friend Santosh. "There were no rains at all."

Allah says "No weariness nor illness nor sorrow nor sadness nor hurt nor distress befalls a Muslim, even to the pricking of a thorn, without Allah's expiating some of his sins by it."

Thabit Ibn Ad-Dahhaak quoted the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, as saying:

“Whoever intentionally swears falsely by a religion other than Islam, then he is what he has said (e.g. if he says, 'If such thing is not true then I am a Jew,' he is really a Jew). And whoever commits suicide with piece of iron will be punished with the same piece of iron in the Hell-Fire.” (Reported by Al-Bukhari)

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, is also reported to have said: "A man was inflicted with wounds and he committed suicide, and so Allah said: My slave has caused death on himself hurriedly, so I forbid Paradise for him.”

We Muslims believe that all our suffering, failures and adversities are nothing but a test from Allah, who has said, “And surely We shall try you with something of fear and hunger, and loss of wealth and lives and crops; but give glad tidings to the steadfast, who say, when a misfortune striketh them: Lo! To Allah we belong and unto Him we are returning.” (Al-Baqarah: 155-56)”
