Are You Lazy or Burnt Out? The Islamic Answer to Losing Motivation

Are you lazy — or are you burnt out?

When your energy collapses, the modern world often gives us two explanations: “You need to try harder” or “You’re burnt out.” But Islamic tradition gives us another way to understand the loss of motivation.

In this video, Dr. Francesca explores kasal (laziness), ʿajz (incapacity), burnout, and fatra — the natural dip that can follow a season of zeal.

Through the story of Ḥanẓala رضي الله عنه and the Prophet ﷺ's words “an hour and an hour”, we explore why spiritual and emotional dips don't necessarily mean you've failed.

We also look at:
• The difference between ʿajz and kasal
• What burnout can tell us about meaning and purpose
• Why rest is not the opposite of productivity
• How to recognise whether you're experiencing fatra, burnout, or kasal
• How to build a “floor” of small, consistent deeds
• Why consistency matters more than intensity
• How Islamic psychology understands motivation and spiritual rhythm

The dip is a law, not a verdict. The question is: where do you land?

If this video helped you, share in the comments: What is the one deed on your “floor” — the thing you try never to abandon, even in a difficult season?

May Allah grant us balance, consistency and sincerity in every season of our lives. آمين
